Step 2: Assemble Base

Start by cutting your 2x4s to size for the base frame of your 20 bin storage rack. Assemble a rectangular frame using wood screws and wood glue for added strength. Ensure the frame is square and level before securing it in place. Each of these two piece will form the two walls of the rack.

Steps:

  1. Cut two 2x4s to the desired base dimensions. These can be pressure treated lumber as they will be in contact with the ground so having pressure treated lumber for this can help prevent decay
  2. Arrange them into a rectangle as shown in the image.
  3. Check for squareness using a carpenter’s square.

Step 3: Wall Assembly Overview

The next steps will focus on assembling the vertical supports and sidewalls of the 20 bin storage rack. Ensure all measurements align before proceeding to avoid any fitting issues. The picture of what the frame will look like after the framing is complete. Follow the next steps on how to build out the walls.

Key Considerations:

  • The front and side walls should be the same height.
  • Optional: Pre-drill holes for easier assembly.

Step 4: Assemble Wall Front

It is best to build out the two walls while they are laying down on the floor. Cut and assemble the front frame of the rack using 2x4s. This frame will support the weight of the storage bins and keep them securely in place.

Steps:

  1. Cut five vertical 2x4s to the rack’s height as shown in the image
  2. Attach horizontal supports to the front face of the vertical supports at appropriate height
  3. Secure the frame with screws, two screws per each connection.
  4. Verify the frame is square and level.

Step 5: Assemble Wall Sides

At this point you have two side walls of your storage bin rack that need to be connected horizontally. Cut two boards of length as shown in the diagram and attach them to the top to act as a horizontal brace.

Steps:

  1. Cut horizontal 2x4s to size.
  2. Secure one wall to another with screws using the horizontal cross board
  3. Repeat for the other side to add a second horizontal cross board to each side of the structure
  4. Double-check for stability and alignment.

Step 6: Install Cross Brackets

Cross brackets add structural strength and prevent wobbling but more importantly, these will act as your shelf brackets for your storage bins. Use 2×4 braces and attach to the vertical studs at the pattern as shown in the image

Steps:

  1. Measure and cut horizontal braces.
  2. Attach them at every connection with 4 screws.
  3. Ensure all brackets are flush with the frame.
  4. Check for movement and reinforce if necessary.

Step 7: Install Top Piece of Plywood

To complete your 20 bin storage rack, install a sturdy plywood top to provide additional storage space and enhance durability.

Steps:

  1. Cut plywood to match the top dimensions.
  2. Secure it with screws along the frame.
  3. Sand any rough edges for a smooth finish.
  4. Optionally, paint or stain for a polished look.

Your DIY 27-gallon 20 bin storage rack is now complete! Enjoy a well-organized and efficient storage system for your space. Happy building!
